Celebrate grizzly bears Huckleberry and Hawthorne's 6th year at Northwest Trek with special keeper chats each day at 1:30pm!
Free with admission.

Meet Huckleberry + Hawthorne

Brothers since 2018

Born in winter 2018, our grizzly bears were orphaned in the wild: Hawthorne in Alaska, Huckleberry in Montana. Neither would have survived without their mom. Cared for by local zoos, they then came to their new Northwest Trek home in August 2018.

Can you tell them apart?

Huckleberry is lighter brown and smaller. Hawthorne is the opposite. Both bears enjoy elk antlers, branches, puzzle feeders filled with chow, and wrestling each other in their deep pool.

Happy gotcha day!

The grizzly boys will be given a special cake to destroy and devour as a special enrichment. Watch them enjoy their treat at 1:30pm each day.

More reasons to celebrate

While Northwest Trek celebrates six great years with Hawthorne and Huckleberry, there will soon be a reason to celebrate the arrival of other grizzly bears in the state. In April, the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced their decision to reintroduce grizzly bears to Washington’s North Cascades, restoring these magnificent animals to their historical habitat and playing a crucial role in the local ecosystem.
